Born in 1982, Han Han won several literary competitions in his youth but then dropped out of high school after failing seven of his year-end exams – two years in a row. He published his first novel, Triple Door, which was heralded as a scathing expose of Chinese society and education, when he was seventeen. Since then he’s written several novels, enraged both liberals and government officials, opened an online bookstore, and become a professional racecar driver. Many Chinese see his as the “rebel child” of the eighties generation, though his views are quite reflective of mainstream thought.
